Description

You’ve photographed the world … is it time for the world to see your images?

With League magazine landing in mailboxes this fall, we’re already planning issue two! League magazine’s 2018 theme is Polar II Prairie. In honour of this theme, we’re hosting a special field mentorship combining photography in a stunning location with intensive photography skill development.

Based out of Val Marie, Saskatchewan—gateway to incredible Grasslands National Park—this is no ordinary photo workshop. Designed to develop and enhance your skills at completing a publishable photo project, from conception to publication, this is your opportunity to obtain one-on-one mentoring with the editors of League (that’s us, Darwin and Sam). Learn skills that will help you submit to any magazine. Wrap up the workshop with us by contributing your images to the final group-curated eFolio!

While we are based in a location that offers plenty of photographic opportunities, this is not a guided photo tour. Part of the mentorship involves some self-directed shooting to develop your creativity skills and complete your photo project.

Skills & Opportunities:

  • advanced personal ‘seeing’ and creative vision
  • planning, shooting and curating a powerful, personal photo project
  • learn how to pitch a perfect submission to League magazine – or any magazine
  • constructive critique (giving and receiving) and tough-minded curation of your work
  • meet like-minded colleagues including members of the League of Landscape Photographers
  • industry insider tips on how to get your work ‘out there’ including print and online publications, self-publishing and exhibitions—avoid common traps!
  • self-directed shooting combined with intensive one-on-one mentoring
  • explore the magnificent prairie and farmlands surrounding our historic accommodations in the Convent Inn
  • have your work published in the group eFolio—or League issue 2!

FAQ

Where are we staying?

Accommodations for participants are at the historic and picturesque Convent Inn in Val Marie. Please note that while all rooms are private, bathrooms are shared. For those wanting double occupancy several rooms have two beds while others have a single queen. Please advise us in advance of your preferences for bed configuration if you are booking doubles.

Is lunch and dinner included in the workshop price?

While breakfast is included, participants are responsible for their own lunch and dinner costs. Val Marie is a small town (population 100) but there are cafés, a restaurant and a grocery store in town. If you have dietary needs, please contact the Convent Inn directly at 306-298-4515.

How do I get to Val Marie?

Val Marie is a 3.5 hour drive from Regina, 4.5 hours from Saskatoon, 6.5 hours from Calgary, 8 hours from Edmonton and 8.5 hours from Winnipeg. Since it is Canada’s sesquicentennial, there is no fee to enter Grasslands National Park.

What should I bring?

Dress for changeable weather! Rain, sleet, frost, sun – expect it all. You should also bring a personal laptop capable of processing your images (if you have one), camera and lenses, tripod and cable release and flashlights if you wish to try any light painting.

What if I am unable to attend (Cancellation Policy)?

Since there is such a short time until the workshop, we require the full payment up front. If you have to cancel, there are no refunds unless we (or you) can fill your spot, in which case we will refund 100% of the workshop fee. But we strongly recommend trip cancellation insurance to cover you should you be unable to attend the workshop.
